The Anchor build started with a WordPress site on PHP 7.4 — end-of-life since November 2022. No real CDN. No WAF. Listing pages loading in 745 seconds. Phase 0 was a foundation fix, not a feature build. Four decisions made in two weeks produced a 4× throughput improvement before any application code changed. That's this module.

PHP 7.4 was end-of-life since November 2022. The 7.4 → 8.2 migration produced a 20–30% baseline throughput improvement before touching application code, zero downtime, and closed a multi-year security exposure window.

Lesson 1.2

Hosting Architecture: Managed vs Unmanaged, CDN Choices, When WAF Earns Its Rent

Shared hosting fails when you have real traffic and a real database. The move to managed cloud (Cloudways + DigitalOcean) and Cloudflare Pro gave full server control, edge caching, and WAF coverage at a cost that's a rounding error against the platform value.

Custom Theme vs Page Builder vs Off-the-Shelf: The Trade You're Really Making

The page builder was producing 80+ div wrappers for a 12-line grid. It owned the layout model. The custom theme — one CSS file, one JS file, no build step — took two weeks to build and has never needed a redesign since launch.

Security Baseline That Doesn't Slow You Down

Four layers: Wordfence (early-launch mode), Cloudflare WAF, daily backups with tested restores, and UptimeRobot on specific endpoints. The setup blocks hundreds of attacks per day and delivers 60-second downtime detection — not 9am client calls.
